Facebook surpasses 3 billion monthly active users

Image
Facebook surpasses 3 billion monthly active users Facebook has more than 3 billion monthly active users, according to Meta’s latest quarterly report. That’s quite the staggering number. Even though Facebook has declined in popularity among younger people, the platform is far from dead. Across Meta’s entire family of apps — which includes WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and now Threads — there were 3.88 billion monthly active users. That’s almost half of the world population. Milestones are fun, but perhaps more importantly for Meta and its investors, daily active users have continued to grow too. Facebook has 2.064 billion daily active users, up from 2.037 billion last quarter. That growth is pivotal, because in the final quarter of 2021, Facebook reported its first-ever quarterly decline in daily active users. This growth could be driven in part by Reels, the TikTok copycat feature that Meta has been pushing heavily across Instagram and Facebook. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerber...

Mark Zuckerberg touts Threads is seeing ‘tens of millions’ people return to the app daily

Image
Mark Zuckerberg touts Threads is seeing ‘tens of millions’ people return to the app daily Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is putting to rest reports that Instagram’s Twitter rival, Threads, is already seeing usage declines, noting in a new post on Monday that “10s of millions of people come back daily.” The app has been off to a remarkably strong start topping 100 million users in a matter of days following its debut and recently reaching one-fifth of the weekly active user base of Twitter. However, a report by analytics firm Similarweb indicated Threads usage had already dropped by half from its initial surge, claiming that daily active users on the Twitter competitor had dropped from 49 million to 23.6 million in just a week’s time. Of course, a slight downturn in usage is common after the initial interest in a new social app wears off. There’s a rush of early engagement as users set up their accounts, follow friends, and make their first posts. But soon after, people have to figure out...

Facebook puts more emphasis on video again with new discovery and editing tools

Image
Facebook puts more emphasis on video again with new discovery and editing tools Facebook announced new video-related features today ranging from editing to discovery to make the platform competitive with YouTube and TikTok. It is also renaming its “Watch” tab to “Video” tab to unify all its video experiences under one place. The company is porting editing tools for Reels to videos for the main feed — this way, people can create short and long videos from one place. Meta is rolling out these tools to Meta Business Suite users already. Additionally, the company is releasing additional editing features, such the ability to adjust speed, reverse, or replace a clip. Meta is also introducing support for HDR videos on Reels — both video uploading and playback. Image Credits: Meta For audio, Facebook is making it easier to find the right audio track, reduce noise, and record a voiceover on top of a video. The social network is also rebranding its “Watch” tab to “Video,” which will now inc...

Teen and mom plead guilty to abortion charges based on Facebook data

Image
Teen and mom plead guilty to abortion charges based on Facebook data A Nebraska woman has pleaded guilty to helping her daughter have a medication abortion last year. The legal proceeding against her hinged on Facebook’s decision to provide authorities with private messages between that mother and her 17-year-old daughter discussing the latter’s plans to terminate her pregnancy. The case is a telling example of how Big Tech can be tapped to help prosecute abortion in the United States, where the Supreme Court in 2022 overturned Roe v. Wade , a 1973 decision that legalized abortion. Experts have warned that location data, search histories, emails, text messages and even period- and ovulation-tracking apps can now be used in the prosecution of people who seek an abortion and those who assist them, and this case shows they are right to worry. Meta, which owns Facebook, could have challenged the legal order to hand over private messages to police, as it and other tech companies someti...

Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks on China cast shadow over Meta’s VR quest

Image
Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks on China cast shadow over Meta’s VR quest As Meta sets its sight on introducing its virtual reality headsets to the Chinese market, Mark Zuckerberg’s contentious remarks about Beijing in the past may pose a major obstacle to his China dream. According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, Meta is preparing to re-enter China by selling the Oculus Quest VR headset there. If Tesla can sell cars and Apple can sell phones in China, why isn’t Meta present there? Zuckerberg asked in a recent internal meeting. But some observers are quick to point out that Zuckerberg has a history of criticizing the Chinese government, a stance that will likely be amplified in the current climate of heightened tensions between the U.S. and China. Caught in U.S.–China tensions In a speech delivered in 2019, Zuckerberg criticized TikTok for its censorship practice: While our services, like WhatsApp, are used by protesters and activists everywhere due to strong encryption...

Threads app hits Top 5 on Apple’s China App Store despite ban

Image
Threads app hits Top 5 on Apple’s China App Store despite ban Threads, Meta’s new social networking platform , is quickly gaining ground in China, where Western social apps from Instagram to Facebook are banned. As of Thursday morning Pacific Time, the Twitter clone introduced by Instagram ranked fifth in the social networking category of Apple’s China App Store, just a day after launching. That’s despite the fact that the app is blocked by the Great Firewall, meaning users in mainland China have to access the platform through a censorship circumvention tool like a VPN, or virtual private network. App Store rankings take into account metrics like new app installs. Threads is currently trailing only after Chinese social giants with hundreds of millions of active users, namely, Xiaohongshu , WeChat (over 1 billion monthly users in its case), QQ and Weibo. It’s unclear whether China blocked Threads at the outset. Greatfire.org, an organization that tracks online censorship, shows tha...

Threads doesn’t deserve my FOMO, but here we are

Image
Threads doesn’t deserve my FOMO, but here we are Be still, my heart. No matter how much FOMO you feel, do not burden me with another social network. Yet, resisting the latest fad app is proving tougher than I thought. Meta (a.k.a. Facebook) is being uncharacteristically smooth in its launch strategy for Threads , the millionth Twitter clone and current number-one app in Apple’s app store. Already, the ad giant is weaving Threads marketing into Instagram. On the notifications screen where I normally see dopamine-inducing likes, Instagram says, “____, ____ and 1 other posted on Threads for the first time.” [cue: that meme of Arthur’s Fist ] Are we not tired of this? Haven’t we, the terminally online, complained about Twitter for years? Do we need a more boring version of the app? As I ask myself these questions, I can hear the buzz. Folks in my orbit really are talking about Threads. On my way to see an allergist yesterday, I scanned the radio and heard a DJ mention the app on a...

Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting Instagram account, Meta says

Image
Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting Instagram account, Meta says Threads, Meta’s Twitter rival , is drawing users at an astounding pace, amassing 10 million signups in just seven hours, according to co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. But the highly-anticipated new service, which requires an Instagram account for onboarding, features an intriguing stipulation: Deleting a Threads account requires deleting the linked Instagram account. In a ‘ Supplemental Privacy Policy ,’ Meta explains: “You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.” The rationale, Meta elaborates on the policy page, is that a Threads profile is part of the user’s Instagram account. The discovery of this stipulation has surprised many users. I deactivated my threads account already but it turns out you can’t delete your threads account *without also deleting your Instagram account* so maybe just don’t sig...
