Meta really wants to explain its AI recommendation algorithms to you

Meta really wants to explain its AI recommendation algorithms to you Meta is publishing new material to explain how its recommendation engine works across different products. Along with that, it is also rolling out a new option called “Why am I seeing this?” for Instagram and Facebook Reels as well as Instagram’s Explore page. This way, you can understand the reason why that post is being shown to you. The company’s president of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, wrote in a blog post that the company wants to be more transparent about its AI systems and give more control to users about the content shown to them. “Today, we’re building on that commitment by being more transparent around several of the AI systems that incorporate your feedback to rank content across Facebook and Instagram. These systems make it more likely that the posts you see are relevant and interesting to you,” Clegg said. Meta said it is testing a new system for Instagram to mark posts with “Interested” to see more co...

When companies have more influence than countries

When companies have more influence than countries Apple recently hit a market cap of $3 trillion only two years after it crossed the $2 trillion mark. Before that, it had taken more than 40 years to make it to $1 trillion. The company recorded revenue of almost $400 billion last year. If Apple were a country, according to the CIA’s World Factbook , its revenue would rank it at No. 50 on the list of countries ranked by GDP. While it’d lag the likes of the U.S., France and Egypt, as a country, Apple would produce more wealth than Norway, Portugal or Greece, and only slightly less than Hong Kong, Peru or Israel. The sheer power of a company like Apple is unlike anything the world has ever seen. It has a rapidly growing footprint in places you might not immediately associate with the iPhone maker, including finance (Apple Card, Apple Pay, and even a high-interest savings account ), health and, of course, communications. It also has a huge storage and processing business in the form of i...

Meta to pull news from Facebook and Instagram in Canada

Image
Meta to pull news from Facebook and Instagram in Canada Meta plans to end access to news on Facebook and Instagram in Canada in response to legislation that would require internet giants to pay news publishers. The legislation, known as the Online News Act, was approved by the country’s Senate on Thursday. The law will force internet giants to negotiate compensation deals with news publishers for posting or linking to their content. “We are confirming that news availability will be ended on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada prior to the Online News Act (Bill C-18) taking effect,” Meta said in a blog post . “We have repeatedly shared that in order to comply with Bill C-18, content from news outlets, including news publishers and broadcasters, will no longer be available to people accessing our platforms in Canada.” Meta has made its position on the matter evidently clear ever since the legislation was first proposed in 2021. Last year, the company threatened to block the ...

Meta previews generative AI tools coming to WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, plus internal AI tools Meta this week showcased its work on new generative AI technologies for its consumer products including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, as well as those being used internally at the company. At an all-hands meeting, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced several AI technologies in various stages of development, including AI chatbots for Messenger and WhatsApp, AI stickers, and other tools that would allow photo editing in Instagram Stories, in addition to internal-only products, like an AI productivity assistant and an experimental interface for interacting with AI agents, powered by Meta’s large language model LLaMA. Axios had first reported the news of the consumer-facing AI agents and photo editing tools, specifically. But the larger presentation touched on a number of areas where Meta is developing AI technologies and commentary about where it sees this space going. In addition,...

Meta Verified arrives in India, now honors ‘legacy’ verified badges Meta Verified, the Facebook and Instagram owner’s recently launched paid verification system , is expanding to India, the company announced today via post from CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his Instagram Broadcasts channel. In addition to its recent expansion to the U.K. and elsewhere, after first arriving in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand earlier this year, the company says paid verification is available to all users in India, with Brazil coming soon. Zuckerberg’s message included Canada and the U.K. as “now available” markets, but the feature was actually spotted rolling out in the U.K. last month . In addition, Meta announced it would begin testing the service in Canada just last week . That means India is the only true new addition here, which a spokesperson for Meta confirmed. “We are expanding the test to India starting today and will roll out on Instagram and Facebook to everyone eligible there over the next co...

To avert more UK antitrust woes, Meta to limit how it uses ad data to boost Facebook Marketplace

To avert more UK antitrust woes, Meta to limit how it uses ad data to boost Facebook Marketplace Facebook’s parent Meta has given key assurances to U.K. antitrust regulators as it looks to counter concerns over how it uses advertising data to benefit its own products. The news comes in the same week as Meta revealed it was selling GIF platform Giphy for $53 million  three years after buying it for $400 million , following a final divestment order issued by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) last October . The CMA also recently blocked Microsoft’s $68.7 billion bid for Activision. At the heart of this specific issue is how Meta is able to leverage data from its core social network to make content display and recommendation decisions in Facebook Marketplace, an online classifieds service launched back in 2016 that allows Facebook users to buy and sell just about anything. Given that Meta can garner insights on users’ interests through their online ad interactions on Facebook...
