Meta will restore Trump’s Facebook account ‘in the coming weeks’

Meta will restore Trump’s Facebook account ‘in the coming weeks’ Two years after the company formerly known as Facebook suspended then-president Donald Trump’s account , it’s bringing him back. Meta announced its decision to restore former president Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts on Wednesday, adding that it would do so in “the coming weeks.” The company was expected to weigh in sometime this month on Trump’s fate. Meta’s semi-independent external policy committee the Oversight Board declined to decide the case itself when given the chance two years ago, but it did push the company to set a timeframe for Trump’s suspension . That two-year suspension period expired this month. As a general rule, we don’t want to get in the way of open debate on our platforms, esp in context of democratic elections. People should be able to hear what politicians are saying – good, bad & ugly – to make informed choices at the ballot box. 1/4 — Nick Clegg (@nickclegg) January 25, 2023...

Meta centralizes more user and privacy settings across its apps, announces changes to ads controls

Meta centralizes more user and privacy settings across its apps, announces changes to ads controls Facebook parent Meta announced today it’s further centralizing various user settings across its suite of apps — Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. As a result, several existing settings will be relocated to Meta’s “Accounts Center” feature, first launched in 2020. Specifically, the changes will see Meta moving settings related to personal details, passwords, security options and ad preferences to this area, which is accessible from the Settings page within each app. Image Credits: Meta Meta says the update is aimed at making its settings experience easier for consumers to use. But in reality, the constant relocation of apps’ settings — something Facebook, in particular, has been notorious for rearranging over the years — can lead to consumer confusion. In this case, however, it may not be too difficult to find the newly moved items, as they’re still going to be in the Settings secti...

Oversight Board presses Meta to revise ‘convoluted and poorly defined’ nudity policy

Oversight Board presses Meta to revise ‘convoluted and poorly defined’ nudity policy Meta’s Oversight Board, which independently evaluates difficult content moderation decisions, has overturned the company’s takedown of two posts that depicted a nonbinary and transgender person’s bare chest. The case represents a failure of a convoluted and impractical nudity policy, the Board said, and recommended that Meta take a serious look at revising it. The decision concerned two people who, as part of a fundraising campaign for one of the couple, were hoping to undergo top surgery (generally speaking the reduction of breast tissue). They posted two images to Instagram, in 2021 and 2022, both with bare chests but nipples covered, and included a link to their fundraising site. These posts were repeatedly flagged (by AI and users) and Meta ultimately removed them, as violations of the “Sexual Solicitation Community Standard,” basically because they combined nudity with asking for money. Although...

Meta’s New Year kicks off with $410M+ in fresh EU privacy fines

Meta’s New Year kicks off with $410M+ in fresh EU privacy fines Meta is kicking off the New Year with more privacy fines and corrective orders hitting its business in Europe. The latest swathe of enforcement relates to a number of EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) complaints over the legal basis it claims to run behavioral ads. The Facebook owner’s lead data protection watchdog in the region, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), announced today that it’s adopted final decisions on two of these long-running enquiries — against Meta-owned social networking site, Facebook, and social photo-sharing service, Instagram. The DPC’s press release reveals financial penalties of €210 million (~$223 million) for Facebook and €180 million (~$191 milliion) for Instagram — and confirms the European Data Protection Board (EDPB)’s binding decision last month on these complaints that contractual necessity is not an appropriate basis for processing personal data for behavioral ads. ...
